Is Heaven your Treasure, Hidden Treasure Parable

Matthew 13:44–52 (NASB95)
44 “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls,
46 and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.
47 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet cast into the sea, and gathering fish of every kind;
48 and when it was filled, they drew it up on the beach; and they sat down and gathered the good fish into containers, but the bad they threw away.
49 “So it will be at the end of the age; the angels will come forth and take out the wicked from among the righteous,
50 and will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
51 “Have you understood all these things?” They said to Him, “Yes.”
52 And Jesus said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has become a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like a head of a household, who brings out of his treasure things new and old.”

In Matthew 13:44-52, Jesus shares several parables to illustrate the value of the kingdom of heaven. Consequently, these teachings provide profound insights into why heaven should be a Christian’s ultimate treasure. Therefore, let us delve into these parables and explore why we should prioritize and cherish the eternal riches of heaven.

Hidden Treasure

In the parable of the hidden treasure (Matthew 13:44), Jesus describes a man who discovers a hidden treasure in a field and, in his joy, sells all that he has to buy that field. This treasure, hidden yet of immeasurable value, likens to the kingdom of heaven.

As Christians, we should let the glorious hope of heaven captivate our hearts. Indeed, the riches and glories of this world pale in comparison to the eternal joy and presence of God that await us in heaven. Consequently, our pursuit of heavenly treasure should lead us to willingly surrender all earthly attachments and distractions, knowing that what we gain in Christ is incomparable.

Precious Pearl

In the parable of the pearl of great value (Matthew 13:45-46), a merchant discovers a pearl of exceptional worth and sells everything to acquire it. This pearl represents the kingdom of heaven, a priceless treasure worth any sacrifice.

Heaven should be our heart’s desire and passion. Therefore, we should be willing to let go of anything that hinders our pursuit of God’s kingdom. Moreover, the joy of being in God’s presence, surrounded by His glory and love, should motivate us to surrender our lives fully to Christ.

Dragnet

In the parable of the dragnet (Matthew 13:47-50), Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven to a net cast into the sea that gathers fish of every kind. God will separate the righteous from the wicked on judgment day, just as the fishermen sort the fish.

Heaven should be our treasure because it is the realm of eternal righteousness and peace. It is a place of holiness and perfection, where sin and evil have no place. As Christians, we long to join this divine gathering, where we will forever unite with our Heavenly Father and fellow believers.

Scribes Instructed

In the parable of the scribes instructed about the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 13:51-52), Jesus emphasizes the importance of understanding and valuing the teachings of the kingdom.

To cherish heaven as our treasure, we must immerse ourselves in God’s Word, growing in our knowledge of His kingdom and His will for our lives. The more we grasp the depth of God’s love and the beauty of His eternal plan, the more our hearts will long for heaven as our ultimate reward.

Conclusion

Heaven should be a Christian’s treasure because it is the kingdom of immeasurable worth, surpassing all earthly treasures. The parables in Matthew 13:44-52 reveal that heaven is a hidden treasure, a precious pearl, and a realm of divine righteousness.

May our hearts be filled with joy and anticipation for the heavenly kingdom, prompting us to surrender all to Christ and seek first His kingdom and righteousness (Matthew 6:33). As we eagerly await the fulfillment of God’s promise, let us keep our eyes fixed on the heavenly treasure that awaits us, knowing that in Christ, we will inherit the eternal riches of God’s kingdom.
